Hip Hop Video Of The Day – Fri 2/10/2009

I know these are backdated but I still thought I should be trying to put up a video each day, so this is some catch up!

The early 90’s definitely holds some of my favourite hip hop memories. I clearly remember working at my parent’s warehouse with my Walkman on,  pumping out the hottest new joints. 1993 and early 1994 listening was dominated by a handful of albums – the internet was unknown to me and hip hop was in limited supply in Brisbane with only two stores importing stuff from the States. Shout out to Rocking Horse Records!

One of those albums was Wu Tang Clan’s debut, “Enter The Wu-Tang”. The line up of nine MC’s blew my mind with previous hip hop groups rarely to my knowledge being larger than 3 members. Nine quality MC’s at that. The Clan released four tracks off the album as singles, “Protect Ya Neck”, “Method Man”, “Can It Be All So Simple” and “C.R.E.A.M.”  although they also made music videos for “Da Mystery of Chessboxin'” and “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit”. The first single, “Protect Ya Neck” was financed by RZA getting each MC that wanted to appear on the track to pay $100. The rest is history.

“C.R.E.A.M.” was my favourite joint off this album and the video features classic early ’90s urban New York clothing like goose-downs, Champion hoodies, black skullies, and beige or black Timberlands. The track has verses from Raekwon and Inspectah Deck with Method Man on the hook (Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M./Get the money; dollar, dollar bill, y’all.). Deck’s verse is bananas and I’ve always loved where Rae shots the Wu symbol at 1:24 in the clip.
